A historic seaside fortress in Alexandria.

Qaitbay Citadel

The Qaitbay Citadel is a 15th-century defensive fortress located on the Mediterranean coast of Alexandria, Egypt. Built by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay in 1477 AD, the citadel stands on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. With its strategic seaside location, thick stone walls, and panoramic views of the sea, it served as a powerful military stronghold against naval invasions.

Today, Qaitbay Citadel is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to explore its towers, courtyards, and historical exhibits while enjoying stunning ocean views. It remains a symbol of Alexandria’s rich maritime history and architectural legacy.
